If the joint at the base of your big toe is swollen, rubs against your shoe and aches by the end of the day, you’re likely dealing with a bunion (hallux valgus). You can’t always change the shape — but you can change how much pressure goes through it, and that’s where comfort comes from.
What a bunion is
A bunion is a bony bump that forms on the inside of the foot, at the base of the big toe. Over time the big toe drifts towards the smaller toes and the joint pushes outward, leaving a prominent lump. Because that lump sits right where a shoe presses, it gets red, sore and inflamed — and the crowding of the toes can ache in its own right.
Bunions tend to develop slowly. Some people are simply more prone to them through the shape of their foot they inherited; for others, years of tight or hard footwear nudge the joint along.
What makes them worse
The single biggest aggravator is footwear that squeezes the forefoot. Narrow, pointed or hard shoes press straight onto the bump and force the toes together, so the joint rubs with every step. High heels add to it by tipping extra load onto the front of the foot. Long hours standing or walking in shoes like these can turn a mild, painless bunion into a sore one.
- Narrow or pointed toe boxes that crowd the toes
- Stiff, hard uppers that rub directly on the bump
- Heels that throw weight onto the forefoot
- Thin, unsupportive soles that let pressure pile onto the ball of the foot
How the right footwear & insoles relieve pressure
You can’t un-form the bump, but you can stop the foot fighting the shoe all day. The right combination does three things — gives the bunion room, cushions it, and shares the load so the joint isn’t carrying more than its share.
Orthopaedic footwear built for this has a wide, rounded toe box so the toes aren’t crowded, and a soft, flexible upper that flexes around the bump instead of rubbing on it. A supportive, cushioned sole then helps spread weight evenly rather than concentrating it on the forefoot.
Custom orthopaedic insoles work alongside the shoe. Built to your own arch height, heel alignment and gait, they:
- Offload the forefoot so less pressure drives through the big-toe joint
- Support the arch so the foot loads in better alignment
- Spread load evenly across the whole foot rather than the sore spot
For many people this is the difference between a bunion that throbs by mid-afternoon and one they barely notice through the day. The goal is steady relief and comfort, not a medical fix.

In Pune? Your first fitting is free. Come into our Budhwar Peth shop and we’ll study your gait, foot shape and pressure points hands-on, then match footwear and capture a precise impression for your insoles.
Anywhere else in India? Our online fitting (₹499, fully credited to your order) assesses your feet over video and from a few photos, then we craft your insoles, choose footwear to suit your foot shape, and courier everything to your door.
An honest note
We’re a specialist fitting shop, not a medical clinic. Wide footwear and custom insoles are about support and relief — they ease the pressure on the joint so your feet feel more comfortable. They won’t straighten the toe or remove the bump. If your bunion is severe, the pain is constant, or you’re considering surgery, please see your doctor or a foot surgeon for a proper diagnosis first; we’re always happy to work alongside their advice.
Frequently asked questions
Can the right footwear get rid of a bunion?
Footwear and insoles won’t reverse the bony bump — that change in the joint stays put. What they can do is take the pressure off it, so the rubbing and aching ease and the bunion is far less likely to be aggravated day to day. It’s about comfort and relief, not reshaping the joint.
What kind of shoes are best for bunions?
Shoes with a wide, rounded toe box and a soft, flexible upper that doesn’t press on the bump. A supportive sole that spreads load helps too. Our orthopaedic footwear is built around exactly these features, and we fit the shape to your foot rather than the other way round.
Do insoles help with bunions?
They can. Custom insoles don’t target the bump directly, but by supporting the arch and spreading load across the whole foot they reduce the pressure pushing through the big-toe joint. For many people that’s what calms the forefoot ache, especially after long days standing or walking.
I’ve had bunion surgery — can you still help?
Often yes, once your surgeon is happy you’re healed. Wide, soft footwear and supportive insoles can keep the forefoot comfortable afterwards. Always follow your surgeon’s guidance first, and we’ll work around their advice rather than against it.
How do I get fitted if I’m not in Pune?
Our online fitting (₹499, fully credited to your order) assesses your feet over video and from a few photos, then we craft your insoles and choose footwear to suit your foot shape and courier them across India. We follow up to make sure the fit feels right.
