If the back of your heel or ankle is stiff and sore — especially with your first steps in the morning or when you start to move after sitting — your Achilles tendon may be under strain. By cushioning the heel and easing the pull on the tendon, the right support can make walking far more comfortable while it settles.
What Achilles tendonitis is
The Achilles is the thick tendon that joins your calf muscles to your heel bone. It takes enormous load every time you push off a step. When it’s overworked, the tendon becomes irritated and inflamed — that’s Achilles tendonitis. You feel it at the back of the heel and lower calf, often as a stiff, tender band that hurts most when you get going.
Signs & symptoms
- Pain and stiffness at the back of the heel or ankle, worst first thing in the morning
- Aching that flares when you start walking and after activity
- Tenderness or a slight thickening you can feel along the tendon
- Stiffness that eases a little once you’ve warmed up, then returns
- Discomfort going up stairs or pushing off to walk fast or run
Why it happens
It’s usually an overload problem. A sudden jump in walking or running, long hours on hard floors, tight calf muscles, flat or overpronating feet, and flat unsupportive shoes all increase the strain the Achilles has to absorb. When feet roll inward, the tendon is twisted and pulled unevenly, which adds to the irritation. Over time the tendon can’t recover between sessions and the pain sets in.
How custom insoles help
Custom orthopaedic insoles ease Achilles pain by taking the strain off the tendon:
- Heel lift — a gentle raise under the heel shortens the stretch on the Achilles with each step, so it isn’t pulled as hard.
- Heel cushioning — shock-absorbing material softens impact at the back of the foot.
- Arch support & alignment — supporting the arch and controlling inward roll stops the tendon being twisted unevenly.
- Offloading — spreading load more evenly across the foot reduces the repeated tug on the heel.
The aim is relief and support — easing the pull so the tendon can recover — not a medical cure.
Supportive footwear matters too
A shoe with a cushioned heel, a firm heel counter to hold the heel steady and a little heel-to-toe drop works with a heel lift to keep the tendon comfortable. Very flat, hard shoes can over-stretch it. Our orthopaedic footwear is built to pair with custom insoles and a heel lift so the support carries through every step.
Our fitting process
We start by understanding your gait, arch type, heel alignment and how much pull is reaching the tendon.
In Pune? Your first fitting is free at our Budhwar Peth shop, where we assess and fit you hands-on.
Anywhere else in India? Our online fitting (₹499, fully credited to your insole order) assesses your feet over video and from a few photos, then we post your custom insoles to your door.
Related conditions
Achilles pain and heel pain often appear together, and both can be made worse by overpronation. Read about heel pain & heel spurs and overpronation if those sound familiar.
When to see a doctor
We’re a specialist footwear shop, not a medical clinic. If your Achilles pain is severe, persistent, or if you ever feel a sudden pop, sharp pain or weakness pushing off — which can signal a tendon tear — please see a doctor urgently. Our role is to support and offload your feet alongside any medical care you receive.
Frequently asked questions
How does a heel lift help Achilles tendonitis?
A small heel raise inside the shoe gently shortens the distance the Achilles has to stretch with each step, so the tendon isn’t pulled as hard. Combined with cushioning under the heel, this offloads the tendon and lets the irritated tissue settle. We tune the height to your feet during the fitting.
Should I rest completely or keep moving?
That’s a question for your doctor or physiotherapist, as it depends on the stage and severity. What we can do is reduce the strain on the tendon while you stay active — heel cushioning, a heel lift and arch support all take load off the Achilles so day-to-day walking is more comfortable.
What footwear is best for Achilles pain?
A shoe with a cushioned heel, a slight heel-to-toe drop and a firm heel counter that holds your heel steady tends to feel best. Flat, hard shoes that drop the heel low can over-stretch the tendon. Our orthopaedic footwear is built to work with a heel lift and insole.
Will insoles cure my Achilles tendonitis?
No — insoles support and offload the tendon, they don’t treat it medically. By easing the pull and cushioning the heel they often make walking far more comfortable while the tendon recovers. For persistent or severe pain, please see a doctor or physiotherapist alongside the support we provide.
Do I need to come to Pune?
No. If you are in Pune your first fitting is free at our Budhwar Peth shop. Anywhere else in India, our online fitting (₹499, fully credited to your insole order) assesses your feet over video and we post your custom insoles to your door.
